Ventilators are the lifeline of any intensive care unit. With so many models on the market, here are the points that matter most when you compare them.
Turbine-driven or compressor-based?
Traditional ventilators depend on a central compressed-air supply or an external compressor. Modern ICU ventilators such as the Crius V6 use a built-in turbine, so they work independently of piped air. That makes them easier to move within the hospital and keeps them running if the air supply fails.
Invasive and non-invasive in one machine
A versatile ICU ventilator should switch smoothly between invasive modes (VCV, PCV, PRVC) and non-invasive modes (CPAP, BiPAP). One machine that covers intubation through to weaning saves money and space.
Battery backup
Power cuts cannot interrupt ventilation. Look for internal lithium-ion batteries that give at least four to six hours of backup.
Service support near you
Ask who will service the ventilator, how quickly an engineer can reach you and whether spare parts are stocked locally. Downtime in an ICU is expensive.
